It is the cool climate, - Simon Nash, a Master of Wine advises - that should allow New Zealand to come closest of all the New World countries in emulating the French. Often used as the benchmark for quality. "Fruit driven" a term apparently much in vogue in this part of the world is indeed apt for their Sauvignons. They easily rival surpass their classic counterpart from Sancerre and Pouilly fume in the Loire District of France and are very versatile with a wide range of dishes. Despite the fact the country has a cool climate, which allows it to produce superlative Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs, it also surprisingly produces a handful of world-class reds from Bordeaux varietals. The names to look for in this category is Providence and Stonyridge.
