Since the beginning of the 17th century, the Malet Roquefort family haslived in Saint-Emilion either in the apartment on the town’s ramparts or at the Chateau La Gaffeliere estate, a locality established in the Middle Ages. The estate has been one of the Premiers Grands Crus Classes since the official list was first drawn up in 1954. After serving to unite France and bring the country together, this very old and noble family (Hastings 1066) set down its roots in this wine region. And here they have remained for nearly 4 centuries. A land of knowledgeable men For 11 generations, the Malet family has thrived here. The current head of the family, Leo, discovered a 4th century Gallo-Roman villa in 1969. The many coloured mosaics were still intact illustrating the vine-growing and wine-making vocation of this locality known as “Le Palat” (palladium, palace) which was, according to CNRS researchers, one of the properties belonging to the poet-consul Ausone (308-394) who gave his name to the current chateau. Murals dating from the late 2nd century attest to the ancient origins of vines here in Saint-Emilion. If the region’s wines are so renowned today, the enduring presence of a few families has clearly played an important role.IN ARDUIS FORTIOR
