CHÂTEAU LABASTIDE ORLIAC
Château Labastide Orliac produces exceptional wines which have conquered the palate of the greatest wine lovers since the 18th century. Its wines have been served at the hâteau de Versailles since 1780. The Labastide Orliac property is located on the first hillsides that border the Garonne river in the heart of South-West France in the Brulhois appellation, between the vineyards of Bordeaux in the North-West, Cahors in the East and Madiran in the South West.
Labastide Orliac is located on the right bank of the Garonne where there are geological layers rich in limestone and clay, as in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. This special terroir is the richness of these wines. The limestones will give finesse and minerality to the wine, they require that the water and the roots of the vine pass through them to reach the clays of the lower layers which will bring the vine its water balance.
It is in this rare balance that the grapes will find their special flavor and give their unique typicity to Labastide Orliac wine. The wines of Domaine Labastide Orliac are made from a blend of 5 grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet-Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Abouriou, Tannat A know-how that respects the environment. Over the past few years, the estate has changed its operating methods to better take into account the challenges linked to biodiversity, land depletion and global warming. Rows of trees and shrubs have been planted in the middle of the vines to retain water running down hillsides, promoting natural biodiversity. Thus, come to settle animals which attack the pests of the vine. Bats, for example, eat the worm which causes bunch rot (botrytis). The Domaine has also started a process on working the soil with the aim of eliminating weed killers, in particular with the development for the harvest of new robots with artificial intelligence, and paradoxically also the return of the horse in the rows of vines. We can thus see an underground fauna flourish between the rows of vines which gives life to the soil, aerates and greatly improves the development of vine stocks. These efforts have also recently been rewarded with the award of the High Environmental Value Label.
Château Labastide Orliac is not only a skill but also a unique story. Indeed, Labastide Orliac wines were once served on the royal table at the Château de Versailles in 1780 when the Château belonged to Jean Orliac. Catherine and Isabelle Orliac, her descendants, were surprised to discover this prestigious past of the Château in 2006. One stormy evening, in the hidden drawer of an old piece of furniture, Catherine and Isabelle discovered manuscripts and objects relating the prestigious past of the estate and the family. In addition, they found, to their great surprise, a letter from the King of France granting protection to their ancestor Jean Orliac. Since then, this wine is again served at the Château de Versailles as well as at Alain Ducasse restaurant in Versailles and is very often rewarded for its quality.
