Weingut von Hövel

Gault Millau praises the consistently outstanding performance of the vineyard of Hövel in Konz-Oberemmel on the Saar. The 7th generation family winery is a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) and is known for its magnificent Riesling Auslese and ice wines from the Blaue Schiefer.

Since 1803, the estate of Hövel is owned by the family and later became a founding member of the VDP. In 2010, Maximilian von Kunow took over the business from his father. Previously, the young winemaker had learned and experimented at other wineries and advised Luxembourg winemakers. His love for the delicate, radiant-fruity Saar Rieslings made him return to his parents' winery. The fact that this decision was the right one is confirmed by the outstanding reviews of the critics!

Great technical progress has passed the vineyard of Hövel: with great effort, especially in the vineyard, the quality is being worked on.  Even the selection of grapes is done meticulously by hand to process only the best grape material. Subsequently, the grapes are spontaneously fermented in a large wooden powder (or stainless steel tank). For sustainable optimization of quality, the winery has been converted to organic farming.

On now 22 hectares of vineyards with blue, the winery of Hövel grows exclusively Riesling. The traditional company is the sole owner of two top locations classified as "Große Lagen". The filigree-elegant wines from the steep areas in the "Oberemmeler Hütte" show with citrus-stone fruit fragrance, herbal notes and characteristic juiciness. Old vines in the steep "Kanzemer Hörecker" give the Riesling an earthy minerality and plant and light tobacco notes. These Rieslings are among the finest in the Saar. In addition, the winery Hövel manages a plot in the legendary "Scharzhofberg", probably the best location on the Saar. Clear, racy and full of character, these "Grand Crus" Riesling enthusiasts all over the world delight.
